Celebration of Color - Embroidery

Warning to my fellow Misfits: These are pictures of my hoop for the swap. If you want it to be a surprise until my partner receives it do not read further. :)

The flowers here have all gone dormant & the world has gone gold. Spring is just a memory now, but I wanted to showcase the variety of the prairie in this fun little embroidery.

I love this horse print & I thought it could use a little stitch-y enhancement.

All done! I think....

...you never know, more may be added before this hoop goes in the mail.

This quote is from one of my favorite songs, "May the Trail Rise Up to Greet You" by Dave Stamey. I love this song! It is so uplifting and I've been known to play it over & over on my drive home from work. :) You can get a taste of the song on iTunes; just look up Dave Stamey, it's near the bottom of the songs list.

I hope my partner likes this hoop & appreciates how much this line means to me. I think she will. ;)

The prairie isn't just a place to live, it's a way of life.

Stitches used: stem stitch & french knot- writing, blanket stitch- applique edge, lazy daisy- grass, straight (fill) stitch- flower/grass stem, horse hair, ears, & eye

Embroidery floss used: Weeks Dye Works in Rum Raisin (love this thread!), Cosmo 6-strand variegated, DMC 6-strand

I'm linking up to Celebrate Color. If you haven't heard of it get over there now! There are some amazing creations & inspiration in all stitching forms.

WIP Wednesday

After living in the mountains for the past few years, and having a very short summer on the Montana prairie last year, I am no longer used to hot weather. July & August were miserably hot and humid (for Wyoming), and since the A/C in the house doesn't work well I was basically a puddle on the floor for most of the summer. Working in a sewing room with a hot iron was out of the question.

With the beginning of September it has cooled down considerably and the leaves are starting to turn yellow. Soon it will be hunting season, The Sewing Summit, our wedding anniversary, jeans & sweater weather...I LOVE autumn!

I know it will warm up again before winter, but I sure am enjoying the cooler nights & tolerable days. I was able to get quite a lot done on Saturday.

Here's what I've been working on:

I completed more work on the Heart & Home quilt that I'm making for our friend as a wedding gift. I'm using Sweetwater's Hometown. Such a great collection!

30 Misfit tree blocks. They still need to be trimmed down, but they will be heading to Kentucky this week where Amanda will be dispersing the trees to all the other Misfits.

Halloween quilt, I'm still working on the layout of the blocks.

Little Apples HSTs. I started with the 2.5" mini charms. Still trying to figure a layout for these as well. I was trying to organize them by color, but my plan is not working so far. I may go for a more random layout as far as color goes.

I also finished bee blocks for 2 bees & got my fabric out because September is my month for String Me Along.

Be sure to visit Lee @ Freshly Pieced and see what everyone else has been working on.

Bee Blocks & Other Business

Sorry I haven't been around much lately. It took me a little while to recuperate from all the family time in May & then my grandfather ended up in the hospital on Memorial Day, after having a stroke. He did make it to his 94th birthday (June 7th), but they took his breathing tube out 2 days later and he passed away in the night.

I didn't get much done while he was in the hospital & since his passing I have been a sewing maniac trying to catch up on a few things!

Here's what I've been working on...

A picnic-y block for mommymae (Fat Stash Bee)

A Drunk Love/Square in Square Block for Elizabeth (String Me Along Bee)

My design wall the other day.

Cathedral Window block for Sara (MSQB)

Any block in pink, orange, & yellow for Johanna (MSQB)

For this block and my 3x6 blocks (below) I decided to use Amy Ellis' Blogger's Block-a-palooza block. Initially it looked like a difficult block, but I loved it so much that I thought I'd give it a shot. Well, I ended up making 8 total with this tutorial. Once all the cutting was done the block came together in no time. If you haven't tried this block yet I highly recommend it.
